Monitoring and modelling lake temperatures in Switzerland

The Swiss Federal Office for the Environment plans to develop a monitoring network for continuous measurements of lake temperatures in Switzerland. The main objective of this project is to scientifically support the development of this monitoring network. This includes the implementation and optimization of pilot monitoring sites, the development of workflows for data acquisition and analysis from the monitoring site, and the development of methods for optimal use of the monitoring data, including data visualization, joint analysis of observed data with temperature simulations from 1-dimensional and 3-dimensional numerical models and lake temperature forecasts.

We are seeking outstanding and highly motivated candidates with an earned doctorate in a relevant field of physics, environmental science or engineering, a strong background in data analysis and numerical modelling and practical experience with limnological field work. Excellent communication skills in English and skills in team work are essential. German language skills for communication with agencies would be an asset.

The successful candidate will have substantial opportunities to develop his or her own research activities in the context of the project and to assist in the supervision of Bachelor and Master students. This is a position with a maximum duration of three years.
