The Postdoctoral researcher will participate in the EU Horizon 2020 RECONECT project that aims to demonstrate, reference and upscale Nature Based Solutions (NBS) in urban, rural and natural areas, and to stimulate sustainable land use planning. The particular work of this position is the investigation of surface water – groundwater interactions which includes sustainable water resources management focusing on groundwater resources. Research questions and fields that are of particular interest include the behavior of microplastics in surface water and groundwater systems, the fate and transport of pesticides, pharmaceuticals and other emerging contaminants in the water cycle as well as behavior of nitrate in agricultural and urban areas. The immediate research results will be brought to collaborators and practitioners.

We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with interests in quantitative analysis and modeling, as well as fieldwork. The postdoctoral researcher will take a leading as well as bridging role in an interdisciplinary project, through understanding water resources management in a framework of NBS as a societal challenge to be tackled.

The successful candidate should have a PhD degree in one of the following disciplines, hydrogeology, hydrology, environmental science and engineering, and water management. The candidate is required to have skills in hydro(geo)logical and/or environmental modelling, field work experience and scientific communication (including paper and report writing, stakeholder collaborations). Proficiency in English is essential. Experience of working with stakeholders in water resources management is highly desirable.

The position is available for 2 years. The preferred starting date is 1 May 2022. The postdoctoral researcher will be based at Eawag in Dübendorf, supervised by Prof. Dr Mario Schirmer and Dr João P. Leitão.
