Did you know that, to this day, environmental risk assessment relies to a large extent on long-term toxicity tests with fish? These tests are lengthy, costly, and ethically challenged. We at Utox work to develop alternative (non-animal) methods to reduce the need for animal testing. One our strategy seeks to predict chemical-induced organism-level effects in vivo based on molecular or cellular changes measured in vitro.

This postdoc project will focus on the role of the mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway in mediating chemical effects on growth in fish. In vitro cultured fish cells will be used as a model to study the consequences of the mTOR signalling disruption for cell metabolic status, growth and proliferation. Protein phosphorylation dynamics along the mTOR pathway will be monitored by means of mass spectrometry-based targeted proteomics assays to understand their causal relationships with the cell outcomes.

We are looking for candidates who share our passion for finding alternatives to animal testing and are keen to make a meaningful contribution to the advancement of mechanistic toxicology. You should hold a PhD in environmental or biological sciences, with a background in proteomics, bioanalytics, biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology or similar areas. Hands-on experience in mass spectrometry analysis and/or data interpretation is crucial. Experience in cell culture and/or toxicological testing will be an asset. Solid work ethics, mature teamwork attitude and good communication skills in English are also essential.
