PhD student in Snow Hydrology

The Research Group Snow Hydrology in Davos investigates the dynamics of snow water resources and snowmelt in alpine watersheds. We are offering a fully-funded PhD position within the SNF project ”Improved methods for incorporating observational data into physics-based, multi-layer snow models” starting on October 2020.
Duty
You will develop novel data assimilation methods, while working with established techniques to inform and improve complex, multi-layer snow model simulations. SLF provides an enriching environment for the successful candidate to develop their research working alongside and collaborating with a motivated team of snow and ice researchers. With direct access to a national snow monitoring network and modern remote sensing data, your doctoral research will demonstrate how various data streams can be dynamically integrated into complex snow models. You will develop improved means of enhancing snow model performance at times and places where observations are available and most importantly how to best leverage this information to improve simulations when observations are unavailable. Research findings will be used to directly improve operational snowmelt forecasts while also benefitting the research community. You will present your scientific results in journal publications and at international conferences.
Requirement

You hold a master’s degree in environmental physics, earth system sciences, or a similar field; or you hold a master’s degree in statistical science or mathematics with an interest in physically based snow models. You must possess or develop the required knowledge to be versatile at applying different data assimilation techniques dependent on data availability and modeling objectives. You are well organized and operate independently in a structured and efficient manner. You appreciate working as part of a motivated, interdisciplinary team, which operates at the interface between science and practice. You have excellent oral and written communication skills in English. German language skills would be valuable.

Please send your complete application to Clemens Güdel, Human Resources WSL/SLF, by uploading the requested documents through our webpage. Applications via e-mail will not be considered.
