The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is part of the ETH Domain. Approximately 600 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards.
PhD Student in ecological evaluation of urban green areas to support blue-green infrastrucutre

The WSL Research Unit "Land Change Science" assesses eco-logical consequences of environmental change. GreenCityNew is an interdisciplinary research project in collaboration with Eawag. It links ecology and social sciences to develop social-ecological networks to assess and evaluate the role of urban green spaces for sustainable cities. For the ecological part of GreenCityNet, we are looking for the duration of four years, starting in November 1, 2022, for a (f/m/d)
Aufgaben
In view of environmental challenges, cities have important potential for actively mitigating biodiversity loss. Whereas city biodiversity is an under-researched topic about a likely under-estimated phenomenon, cities are at the same time mentioned as one of the key entry points for sustainable development. Urban green areas are ascribed to provide spatially distributed habitats for biodiversity, and, at the same time, to increase/maintain the resilience of urban ecosystems for mitigating the major environmental challenges of the 21st century. Green areas encompass short-term vacant lots, vegetated rooftops, highly managed and persistent parks and cemeteries, or new habitats such as vertical green walls. The combination of different types of green areas represents a spatially distributed habitat network with different types of interactions among them (species movement, pollination, etc.) with different cross-scale ecosystem services. Networks of green areas thus potentially provide functional green infrastructure supporting both, ecological habitats and human needs for safe and sustainable cities.
Anforderung
You hold a Master’s degree in the field of environmental science, ecology or biology. You are interested in evaluating higher-scale concepts of social-ecological systems and ecosystem services ecologically and functionally with local-scale indicators as derived from entomology and plant communities. Furthermore, you like to conduct field work in urban areas and you are highly motivated to quantitatively analyse ecological networks. You are interested in interdisciplinary research and curious how your ecological network is linked to social networks by your project partners. As a team player, you have good oral and written communication skills, are well organised and able to work independently and efficiently.

Please send your complete application to Beatrice Lamprecht, Human Resources WSL. Janine Bolliger (janine.bolliger@wsl.ch), will be happy to answer any questions or offer further information.
