The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is part of the ETH Domain. Approximately 600 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards.
Post-Doc in modelling host plant susceptibility to bark beetle attack (80%)

The research unit ‘Forest Health and Biotic Interactions’ studies the influence of biotic factors on forest health and develops the scientific basis for the protection of forests against possible harmful organisms. In the framework of the new initiative "eXtremes" 2021-2024, the research group Forest Entomology is searching for the duration of one year, starting this fall, for a (f/m/d)
Aufgaben
You will complement an existing model of spruce bark beetle phenology with a new model on spruce tree susceptibility based on water supply to the trees (drought index). To that end, you evaluate existing models from the literature and data available for Switzerland. Using the appropriate resources, you will build your own tree susceptibility model. You will collaborate with other researchers of this large interdisciplinary project on "machine learning aided forecasting of drought related extremes". In a later phase, these forecasts will be incorporated in the bark beetle and host tree models to better project the future risk of bark beetle attack.
Anforderung
You have a PhD in an ecological science field and a strong background in mechanistic modelling ('R' preferred). Ideally, you are experienced in plant-insect interactions and drought effects. You are ambitious and highly motivated, used to a high standard of independent, structured and careful work, and demonstrate a high level of team spirit.

Please submit your complete application online to Michèle Bucher, Human Resources WSL, by uploading the requested documents on our webpage. Applications via email will not be considered. Martin Gossner, martin.gossner(at)wsl.ch or Beat Wermelinger, beat.wermelinger(at)wsl.ch will be happy to answer any questions. The evaluation process will start in the beginning of September, but the position will remain open until filled. WSL strives to increase the proportion of women in its employment, which is why qualified women are particularly called upon to apply for this position.
