The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is a part of the ETH domain. Approximately 500 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards.
Post-Doc BGB2020 Insect or Community Ecology (80‒100%)

The Blue-Green Biodiversity 2020 is a new initiative between WSL and eawag (Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology). Please find more information on our homepage at: press release BGB2020 . In the frame of this initiative within the research group ‘Conservation Biology’ of the research unit ‘Biodiversity and Conservation Biology’ of WSL, we are searching for one year (possibility of extension), with a start between August and October 2020 a
Aufgaben
You will assess temporal trends in insect abundance, biomass and richness, and analyse change in the abundance of specific taxa and functional groups by using time series data from both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. You will evaluate environmental factors likely influencing these temporal dynamics, paying particular attention to those that might represent ecosystem inter-connectedness. Finally, you strive to interlink insect abundance trends with population data of strongly insectivorous bird species dependent on aquatic and terrestrial habitats. The project will be mentored by Kurt Bollmann and Martin Obrist (Conservation Biology) from WSL, and carried out in close collaboration with Nele Schuwirth (Ecological Modelling) and Florian Altermatt (Spatial Dynamics) from eawag, Dübendorf.
Anforderung

You have a PhD in biology, ecology or environmental sciences, with a strong background in insect ecology and/or biodiversity research, data management and statistical analyses. Ideally, you are familiar with statistical models to relate temporal and spatial changes to environmental predictors, and you have experience with large datasets. You have demonstrated the ability to publish own research in isi-journals and ideally also in outreach publications. You are very ambitious and motivated, are used to a high standard of independent, structured and careful work, and demonstrate a high level of team spirit.

Please submit your complete application online to Michèle Bucher, Human Resources WSL, by uploading the requested documents through our webpage. Applications via email will not be considered. For further information, please contact Kurt Bollmann, kurt.bollmann(at)wsl.ch. The evaluation process will start in July 2020, but the position will remain open until filled. WSL strives to increase the proportion of women in its employment, which is why qualified women are particularly called upon to apply for this position.
