RF Electronics Engineer
The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of matter and materials, energy and environment and human health. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. PSI operates several particle accelerators, including SwissFEL, a free electron X-Ray laser driven by a 600 m long linear accelerator, and the Swiss Light Source (SLS), an electron storage ring with 288 m circumference. The SLS provides photon beams of high brightness for research in materials science, biology and chemistry. After about two decades of operation, PSI plans to replace the existing SLS storage ring by a new one (“SLS 2.0”) providing much higher photon beam brightness. The proton accelerators at PSI include the cancer therapy facility PROSCAN, as well as the high-intensity proton accelerator HIPA with the world's most intense CW proton beam.
The Accelerator Feedbacks and Measurement Systems Group is responsible for RF based measurement and fast beam feedback systems at the different electron and proton accelerators at PSI. We also collaborate with other institutions, e.g. the European X-Ray free electron laser in Hamburg, where PSI contributed an ultra-fast Intra Bunch Train Feedback, as well as high-resolution beam position measurement systems.

Aufgaben
You are responsible for the development, characterization, upgrades and operation support of new and existing RF-front-end and mixed signal electronics, in the frequency range of 0.1-5 GHz. Your tasks include the development of concepts for new systems, and the design of board schematics and PCBs in collaboration with different PSI service groups. You participate in the test and commissioning of new systems in the lab and at the particle accelerators, including the development of new RF measurement and calibration techniques and systems to improve the performance of our complex high-end systems. You develop measurement and calibration algorithms and related software in collaboration with other engineers and physicists. You also participate in the development and test of passive microwave structures, like capacitive and resonant beam position monitor pickups, or fast stripline kicker magnets.
Anforderung
You are a RF engineer with a master or PhD degree, or have an equivalent qualification (e.g. physicist with strong RF/electronics background). You have very good knowledge in the development of low-noise RF front-end electronics up to several GHz, and in the design of low-jitter clock circuits and fast data conversion systems up to several Gsamples/s. You have basic knowledge of digital electronics and FPGA/SoC technology, and at least basic programming skills, preferably in Python, C/C++, and/or Matlab. Experience in particle accelerator technology, particle beam diagnostics, and accelerator control systems like EPICS is beneficial. You enjoy working in an interdisciplinary team, both as a developer, and as a coordinator for sub-projects, where you specify and supervise developments by service groups or companies. You have very good oral and written communication skills in English. Knowledge of German is beneficial.
