Empa - the place where innovation starts

Empa is the research institute for materials science and technology of the ETH Domain and conducts cutting-edge research for the benefit of industry and the well-being of society.
Postdoc position in the field of ultrafast THz-STM on atomic quantum systems in 2D materials
As a part of the ERC Grant "AQE2D" our nanotech@surfaces Laboratory is offering a
Duty
We are looking for an outstanding candidate with a strong background in ultrafast optics and THz pump-probe spectroscopy. In this project you will work at a new research frontier combining scanning probe microscopy with phase-stable THz pulses achieving simultaneous atomic spatial and sub-picosecond temporal resolution. You will develop an optical setup to generate phase-stable, sub-cycle THz pulses by optical rectification of a femtosecond IR laser in a nonlinear crystal and probe the THz electric-field transients by electro-optical sampling. During the first build-up phase you will be trained on our state-of-the-art low-temperature scanning probe systems to probe electronic and magnetic properties of single atomic defects in 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). By means of lightwave-driven tunneling, you will explore the dynamics of electronic, spin and optical excitations of atomic-scale quantum systems in solid-state 2D materials platforms.
Requirement

Required qualifications include a PhD degree in Physics or Materials Science, and a strong background in ultrafast optics and pump-probe spectroscopy. An optimal candidate has previous experience in sub-cycle THz pulse generation and sampling. Experience in ultra-high vacuum and scanning probe microscopy are beneficial, but not necessarily required. We are looking for a highly motivated candidate that can lead her/his own projects independently, has excellent communication skills, is curious to learn new things and is excited about our mission.

Work with us on an exciting new research frontier bringing together the ultra-small and ultrafast. Be part of a small world-class team with a global network of collaborators where you can build a competitive research portfolio and gain first experience in leading your own research project. Located in the Zurich Area, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technologies (Empa) offers outstanding infrastructure, a broad interdisciplinary environment and competitive salaries.

The position is available starting June 2021 or upon agreement, with a planned duration of two years with a possible extension of two more years.

For further information about the position please contact Dr Bruno Schuler bruno.schuler@empa.ch and visit our websites www.empa.ch/web/s205 and Empa-Video

We look forward to receiving your online application including a brief motivation letter, CV, diplomas with academic transcripts and contact details of two referees. Please upload the requested documents through our webpage. Applications via email will not be considered.
