Empa - the place where innovation starts

Empa is the research institute for materials science and technology of the ETH Domain and conducts cutting-edge research for the benefit of industry and the well-being of society.
Post-Doc in Single Crystal Materials Research

In a joint project with another Swiss research institute and an industrial partner, we will develop new material compositions for innovative products for the single crystal growth market. Hereby the mechanical characteristics, as well as the controlled optical properties and their stability upon UV light exposure will be of primary concern. This will require a close coordination and a sound degree of responsibility within the project team.

Within the scope of these activities, our Laboratory for High Performance Ceramics offers a position for a

Duty
to develop and validate new material compositions for oxide-based single crystals meeting the high-est standards. Using different dopants and dopant compositions, powder processing, crystal growth and characterization thereof will be performed with the aim to deliver novel outstanding crystal products to our industrial partner and enable innovation and value creation for their customers. An in-depth knowledge of solid state physics (color centers and single-crystal growth) is necessary.  Hands-on experience in powder processing, sintering and optical floating zone furnace processing is an advantage.
Requirement
For this ambitious project, we are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a Ph.D. in materials science or physics. The ideal candidate needs to be fluent in English (oral and written) and preferably has a fluent knowledge of French. Basic knowledge of German is an asset.

We are offering a multifaceted and challenging position in a dynamic research environment with ex-tensive infrastructure. This position will be available from May 1st, 2021 with a planned duration of 18 months.
