Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.
2-year Postdoctoral Position in Hydrogeology
The Hydrogeology Group of the Department Water Resources and Drinking Water (W+T) at Eawag in Dübendorf has a vacancy for a
The Postdoctoral researcher will participate in a project to understand and forecast groundwater dynamics and to assess the impact of climate extremes on groundwater systems. In the project, we aim to develop a method to (i) systematically analyze the sensitivity of groundwater systems in Switzerland to extreme events and (ii) forecast groundwater levels. The results from the project will be used to develop an operational groundwater information system, helping water decision makers to make short- and long-term decisions on the management of groundwater. The immediate research results will be brought to collaborators and practitioners.

We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with interests in quantitative analysis and modeling. The postdoctoral researcher will take a leading role in this project on time-series analyses to understand groundwater dynamics in the past and forecast water levels in the short and longer term. This will help water resources management in a changing world.

The successful candidate should have a PhD degree in one of the following disciplines, hydrogeology, hydrology, environmental science and engineering, and water management. She/he is required to have skills in hydro(geo)logical and/or environmental modelling and scientific communication (including paper and report writing, stakeholder collaborations). Proficiency in English is essential. Experience of working with stakeholders in water resources management is highly desirable.

The position is available for 2 years. The preferred starting date is 1 October 2022. The postdoctoral researcher will be based at Eawag in Dübendorf, supervised by Prof. Dr Mario Schirmer and Dr Christian Moeck.
