Ultrasound/Transducer Design Engineer – Electrical Engineer
Duty
  • Design & simulate ultrasound transducers to meet defined acoustic field parameters with a focus on Piezoelectric Micromachined Ultrasound Transducers (PMUT) or Capacitive Micromachined Ultrasound Transducers (CMUT)
  • Prototype to clinic: lead designs from simulation through reality.
  • Engineer complete ultrasound systems: multi-channel high-voltage transmission, TX/RX, beamforming, ADC, and data interfaces — all tuned to specific transducer requirements (voltage, current, repetition rate).
  • Translate concepts to reality: collaborate with partners or set up in-house fabrication workflows for custom transducers.
  • Integrate across disciplines: work with materials scientists, roboticists, and surgeons to create devices with direct clinical impact.
Requirement
  • MSc or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Ultrasound Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field.
  • Proven expertise in ultrasound transducer design, simulation (Field II, k-Wave, PZFlex, COMSOL), and CMUT/PMUS technologies.
  • Knowledge of ultrasound transducer manufacturing and collaboration with commercial or in-house fabrication teams.
  • Experience in full ultrasound hardware development: high-voltage analog electronics, FPGAs, T/R switching, beamforming, ADC, and interface design.
  • Proficiency in PCB design (Altium preferred), embedded systems (STM32, RP2040, ARM Cortex-M), and analog/digital signal processing.
  • Bonus: MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW, C/C++, ROS, or wireless interfaces (BLE, LoRa).
  • Independent, curious, and impact-driven — ready to move fast, break silos, and turn concepts into working solutions.
Benefit
  • Impact from day one: Work on technologies already moving toward clinical trials.
  • Direct access to the field: Collaborate with scientists, engineers, surgeons, patients, and regulatory experts.
  • World-class facilities: Prototyping labs, cleanrooms, imaging systems, electronics labs across ETH Zurich, Empa, BRNC, and University of Zurich / Balgrist.
  • Entrepreneurial ecosystem: Be part of one of Europe’s most dynamic medtech hubs, with clear spin-off opportunities.
  • Mentorship & growth: Learn from leading interdisciplinary innovators.
  • Ownership & flexibility: Drive your own projects, explore new ideas, and learn through rapid iteration.
  • Location: Zurich - at the heart of the Swiss innovation landscape, with the Alps, lakes, and culture at your doorstep.
