The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is part of the ETH Domain. Approximately 600 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards.

Post-Doc in “Characterizing the Impact of Extreme Droughts on Vegetation Responses in Mountain Systems” (80-100%)
In 2021, WSL has launched the Research Program “Extremes” on inter- and transdisciplinary research on future extreme events. Its goal is to equip Swiss stakeholders with appropriate decision-making tools and coping strategies addressing future extremes. Please find more information on our homepage at: Extremes Initiative WSL.

In the framework of this program, the Dynamic Macroecology Group within the Land Change Science Research Unit in collaboration with the High Mountain Glaciers and Hydrology Group within the Mountain Hydrology and Mass Movement Research Unit, is searching for two years with start between October and December 2021 a
Aufgaben
You will downscale climate data to very high spatial resolutions using the CHELSA model to identify the occurrence and severity of droughts in selected mountain systems worldwide. You will investigate the effects of these droughts on vegetation, using remote-sensing products. You will tightly collaborate with a PhD student and a Post-Doc who will develop a physical land-surface model to simulate the hydrology and vegetation response for selected droughts. In this context you will quantify the relationship between the state of vegetation and the hydrological cycle and compare numerical model outputs with observations. You will be based at WSL in Birmensdorf in the Dynamic Macroecology group, and will work in close collaboration with the High Mountain Glaciers and Hydrology Group and the Forest Dynamics Group.
Anforderung
You hold a PhD in climate science, environmental sciences, geography, ecology or a related field. You have experience in handling and analyzing big geoscientific data sets and you have and have experience in using climate model output. Additionally, you have experience in working with remote-sensing products, ideally with a focus on vegetation dynamics. Strong skills in using supercomputers and/or cloud computing (i.e. Google Earth Engine) are a requirement. Furthermore, you should have excellent knowledge in geo-statistics. You are fluent in Python, R or Java, and used to work on Linux-based systems. You are proficient in English and have a demonstrated capability of writing scientific papers. You are ambitious and highly motivated, used to a high standard of independent, structured, and careful work, and demonstrate a high level of team spirit.
