PostDoc in Artificial Intelligence for Forest Assessment (80%-100%)
The Research Unit Forest Resources and Management assesses and analyses changes in forests and is offering within the Scientific Service NFI research group a position for two years as
Duty
You will investigate the potential of 360° panoramic images for the aims of the Swiss National Forest Inventory (NFI). You will develop a method to automatically assess forest information on single-tree level (tree position, tree diameter at breast height and others) from 360° images. In your work you will use artificial intelligence (AI) techniques (deep learning) and the NFI field data will serve you as reference. You will publish your results in international scientific journals and present them at conferences. In your research you will be supported by an interdisciplinary project team and the IT infrastructure of WSL will be at your disposal.
Requirement
You have a PhD degree in remote sensing, computer vision, environmental sciences, geography, geomatics or similar. Furthermore, you are technically skilled and have programming experiences. Knowledge in forestry or forest ecology, statistics, as well using AI approaches (deep learning, machine learning) in your previous work are advantageous. You are a motivated, creative and reliable person working conceptually and enjoying both self-reliant work and work in a team. You have excellent oral and written communication skills in English, as well as proven experience in writing and publishing scientific papers.
