Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems. Eawag offers excellent technical support and infrastructure to conduct cutting-edge research.
Post-doc position in Urban Climate Downscaling
The “Blue-Green Infrastructure” lab at Eawag invites applications for a
Duty
As climate change continues to accelerate worldwide, cities will need to adapt to more extreme rainfall, temperatures, and drought. Blue-green stormwater infrastructure (BGI), a spatially distributed system of BGI elements such as urban streams, constructed wetlands, or green roofs, can be used to mimic natural systems and therefore increase urban resilience. Climate change scenarios can be used to understand how BGI would perform in a future climate. However, there is a mismatch between the output from climate models and the resolution of inputs needed for simulation models that evaluate BGI performance. In this post-doctoral research project, you will be responsible for statistically downscaling rainfall, temperature, and other outputs from regional climate models in order to use the future scenarios in hydrologic and microclimate simulation models.

The selected candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary consortium of researchers in the fields of urban water management, urban climate, and urban biodiversity. The candidate will have the opportunity to mentor and exchange with the PhD student also working on this project. The position is available for a period of at least 18-months, and should start in Fall 2022. Employment level is flexible between 80 and 100%. The position is based in Dübendorf (near Zurich) in the group of Dr Lauren Cook in the Urban Water Management Department at Eawag.

To apply, you must have completed (or be in the process of completing) a PhD in Civil, Environmental, or Mechanical Engineering, Atmospheric Science, Statistics, Machine Learning, or a related field. Proficiency in English is required, and knowledge of German is an advantage. The ideal candidate is an intrinsically motivated, independent person who is dedicated to the interdisciplinary research needed to increase urban resilience. Experience with climate modeling and familiarity with hydrologic and/or urban micro-climate models is desired.

Eawag is a modern employer and offers an excellent working environment where staff can contribute their strengths, experience and ways of thinking.
