Country Director South Sudan and Uganda 100 % (m/f/d)
In the role of the Country Director, you carry overall responsibility for managing the country organizations in South Sudan and Uganda and for setting the strategic orientation of the country programs. You ensure that Caritas Switzerland’s mission and vision are fulfilled and that programs create meaningful impact for communities. This includes providing collaborative leadership, fostering an inclusive and supportive work environment, guiding teams, overseeing project implementation, and driving the acquisition of new projects through partnerships with bilateral and multilateral donors.
You collaborate closely with your colleagues at Head Office in Lucerne who work in an ongoing transformation process to a holacratic setting. You are part of this change process and support the endeavour to build Holacracy at Caritas Switzerland.
Duty
- Operational and strategic planning and management of the country organisations in Uganda and South Sudan and their programs and projects, including HR-management, finances (budget/income) in close cooperation with the staff at Head Office
- Provide respectful, attentive and collaborative leadership for staff in Uganda and South Sudan
- Engage in fundraising, networking and open and trust based relationship building with national and international partners, donors and the Caritas network
- Lead or participate in project development and the development of innovations
- Follow up on project implementation and monitor progress, working with teams to apply adaptive measures when required
- Collaborate in the development of the International Cooperation Section of Caritas Switzerland
- Participate in and initiate regional dialogues and knowledge-sharing within the East Africa Region, support joint initiatives and strengthen regional collaboration
- Ensure processes and systems for administrative and financial compliance are updated and adhered to
- Risk and security management, crisis management as needed
- Participate in the development of self-organisation structures – and actively support them
Requirement
- Master’s degree
- 5 years of previous experience in international team management in an NGO/development agency or similar, preferably in a fragile context
- Knowledge/experience on current topics of international cooperation, such as market systems development, graduation approach, humanitarian aid, triple nexus projects, gender equality an asset
- Experience in project and program management
- Ability to develop successful and innovative project proposals in a collaborative way
- Familiarity with the donor landscape in East Africa and the various donor requirements (EU, UNICEF, UNOCHA, European donors, etc.) an asset
- Representational, networking, negotiation and fundraising skills
- Proven experience in risk, security and crisis management preferred
- Solid financial understanding, with the ability to grasp financial implications and take appropriate measures and decisions.
- Experience in budget management, management of processes preferred
- Respectful, attentive, and supportive leadership style that fosters collaboration and trust in international, multi-cultural teams and also remotely.
- Flexible team player and able to work independently, collaborative attitude
- Open to new work concepts (self-organisation / Holacracy)
- Calm under pressure and able to manage work-life balance well
- Excellent command of English, German or French an asset
